COURSE DESCRIPTION
Spanish III continues the emphasis on oral communication which is the TEKS program goal of communication, culture, connections, comparisons and communities. The goal is to use as much Spanish as possible in the classroom. The teacher will use English to clarify concepts or to make important announcements. Active participation, especially speaking, is an essential part of the course. This course includes tests (oral and written), projects (oral and written), quizzes (oral and written), and daily homework.
OBJECTIVES
In accordance with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for Languages Other Than English (LOTE) guidelines, students will expand their ability to perform the tasks of the intermediate language learner. Therefore, the students will be able to:
-communicate using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing
-discuss a variety of cultural topics related to Spanish-speaking countries and compare these with their own language and culture
-better participate in the community using Spanish
REQUIRED MATERIALS

The student may want to purchase the following books: Spanish-English Dictionary and “501 Spanish Verbs.”
OPTIONAL MATERIALS:
I would greatly appreciate it if the student brought a box of Kleenex. Other materials include: dry erase markers, glue sticks, and paper towels.

In order to keep up with the class and to be able to participate fully, always bring your text to class!
DAILY/ HOMEWORK POLICY
The purpose of homework is to extend both the frequency and the total time the learner is practicing Spanish. It needs to be totallycompleted. No credit is given for incomplete, late or unexcused work. (Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with individually). Daily/ homework will either be graded or a completion grade.
TARDY POLICY
The tardy policy, as outlined in the student handbook, will be followed. A student must be in the classroom before the tardy bell rings. A tardy student will not receive credit for any homework collected, class work completed, or quiz taken while the student is out of class. (Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with individually).
MAKE-UP POLICY
Make-up work is the responsibility of the student. The make-up policy for absences is described in the Student Handbook. If a student is absent for a school activity, s/he is required to notify the teacher the day BEFORE the absence (or earlier) to get assignments and schedule any make-up quizzes or exams. Make-up quizzes and exams are scheduled at the teacher’s discretion.
ELIGIBILITY
Eligibility follows UIL guidelines as stated in the Student Handbook, meaning “No pass, No play”.

- Binder/folder for handouts
- Paper and pen or pencil
- Personal day planner, calendar, or assignment notebook.

- 50% major grades, which are exams or projects
- 20% orals
- 20% quizzes
- 10% daily class work / homework

- Use only Spanish with your classmates and the teacher.

- Be respectful of people and property.
- Be prepared and arrive on time to class.
- Participate. (Speak Spanish!)
- Do not work on other subjects in class.
- Cell phones must be turned off and stowed in backpacks unless otherwise specified.
- IPads must be used responsibly. Students should only be using iPads for Spanish assignments. Students are not permitted to play videogames, engage in social networking, listen to music or do classwork for other classes. A three-strike rule will be applied: a student will lose his/her privilege of using an iPad in class after three offenses for the remainder of the semester.
- If an online translator is used on any graded assignment, a grade of zero will be assigned and this is considered an Honor Code Violation.
