Course Description
Spanish II, a continuation of Spanish I, is a highly structured academic elective. This course continues the emphasis on oral communication based on the framework which is the TEKS program goal of communication, culture, connections, comparisons and communities. Class participation is essential in order to develop this oral proficiency. Listening, reading, and writing will also continue to be developed. This course includes the study of cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. This course will include tests, quizzes (oral and written), homework (study and written – a minimum of 20 minutes EACH DAY) and special projects (oral and written).
Objectives
At the end of this program the student should be able to:
-communicate using the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the range of Novice-High to Intermediate-Mid (ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines)
-be able to discuss varied topics related to the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries
-make connections with other subject areas in Spanish and acquire information
-develop insight into the nature of the Spanish language and culture by comparing them with the student’s own language and culture
-participate in his/her own community by using Spanish

The student may want to purchase the following books: Spanish-English Dictionary and “501 Spanish Verbs.”

The six weeks grade is based on:
Participation Policy
Participation is essential in order to develop oral proficiency and attain the Novice-High to Intermediate-Mid range by the end of the year. In order to do this, the following are the EXPECTATIONS with regard to participation:
Daily Work Policy
The purpose of daily work is to extend both the frequency and the total time the learner is practicing Spanish and to teach and reinforce the valuable study skill of independent practice outside the classroom. It needs to be totally completed. Late work will not be accepted. Daily work will be graded for content and/or completion. Extenuating circumstances will be dealt with individually.
Make-up Policy Make-up work will follow procedures as outlined in the Student Handbook. Make-up work is
the responsibility of the student, not the teacher. It is the responsibility of the extracurricular participant when the class is missed to ask for and receive all make-up work. The policy is fully described in the Student Handbook.
Tardy Policy The tardy policy as outlined in the Student Handbook will be followed.
Westlake High School Exam Exemption Policy Refer to the student manual. Eligibility In all cases, eligibility follows UIL guidelines as stated in the student handbook. NO PASS, NO PLAY!
Classroom Rules and Procedures
1.. Be respectful of people and property.
2. Be prepared and arrive on time to class.
3. Participate. (Speak Spanish!)
4. Do not work on other subjects in class.
5. Cell phones must be turned off and stowed in backpacks unless otherwise specified.
6. IPads must be used responsibly. Students should only be using iPads for Spanish assignments.
Students are not permitted to play videogames, engage in social networking, listen to music or do classwork for other classes. A three-strike rule will be applied: a student will lose his/her privilege of using an iPad in class after three offenses for the remainder of the semester.
7. If an online translator is used on any graded assignment, a grade of zero will be assigned and this is considered an Honor Code Violation.

- 20% quizzes
- 10% daily (includes daily and homework assignments)
- 20% oral (includes oral presentation and oral participation)
